Binary Strings Extractor — Extract ASCII & Unicode Strings

Extract printable ASCII and Unicode (UTF-16) character sequences from binary files, executables, memory dumps, and compiled libraries. Reverse engineers, security analysts, and developers use the POSIX strings algorithm to discover hardcoded URLs, IP addresses, error messages, and debug symbols inside opaque binaries. Drop any file below to inspect extracted strings 100% client-side.

What is the Strings Utility?

The strings utility is a standard Unix/POSIX diagnostic command that scans binary files for contiguous sequences of printable graphic characters (ASCII 32–126 and newline/tab) terminated by a null byte () or non-printable character.

In software development and digital forensics, extracting strings reveals critical static metadata embedded in compiled code without executing it—such as copyright notices, compiler flags, internal API URLs, database connection strings, and debug error messages.

How to extract strings from binary files

  1. Upload or drop your binary file. Drop an .exe, .dll, .so, .bin, firmware dump, or compiled binary into the drop box above.
  2. Configure scan parameters. Set the minimum character threshold (default: 4 characters) and select ASCII or UTF-16 Unicode scanning.
  3. Filter and search extracted strings. Quickly search for specific keywords, function names, file paths, or check 'URLs & IPs Only'.
  4. Download output as TXT or CSV. Export all identified strings with their hex offset addresses for reverse engineering and static malware analysis.

Why Client-Side Binary Scanning Matters

Binary files, firmware images, and core dumps often contain proprietary intellectual property, cryptographic keys, or sensitive customer data. Our extractor executes 100% in local WebAssembly and JavaScript memory—no binary bytes or strings are ever uploaded to remote servers.

Frequently asked questions

What file formats are supported?

Any binary or data file can be scanned, including Windows executables (.exe, .dll), Linux binaries (.elf, .so), macOS Mach-O files, ROMs, firmware (.bin), and raw memory dumps.

Does it support UTF-16 Unicode strings?

Yes. The scanner detects both 8-bit ASCII character runs and 16-bit wide-character (UTF-16LE/BE) Unicode strings.

Can I filter for URLs and IP addresses?

Yes. Toggle the 'URLs & IPs Only' option to filter the extracted string list down to web endpoints, domains, and IP addresses.

What is the maximum file size?

Because processing runs in browser memory via streaming ArrayBuffers, files up to 100 MB–250 MB process smoothly in seconds.

Are my binary files uploaded anywhere?

No. All scanning happens locally on your computer inside your web browser.
