What is Base64 encoding and Data URIs?
Base64 encoding (defined under IETF RFC 4648) converts binary data into a set of 64 ASCII characters. A Data URI uses the format data:[<mediatype>][;base64],<data> to embed inline images and files directly inside HTML documents or JSON payloads.
EasyExtract decodes Base64 payloads locally in browser memory without sending string data across the network.
How to decode a Base64 string or image
- Paste or drop Base64 string. Paste your raw Base64 string or data URI into the input box above, or drop a text file containing the payload.
- Click Decode & Extract Asset. The browser decodes the binary stream using window.atob and creates a blob URL in memory.
- Inspect image preview. If the Base64 payload represents a raster image (PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF, SVG), a live preview renders automatically.
- Download original file. Click 'Download Decoded File' to save the original binary asset to your device with the correct file extension.
What formats can be extracted from Base64?
- Raster Images: PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF.
- Vector Graphics: SVG.
- Documents: PDF, TXT.
- Binary Data: Raw byte arrays and custom file streams.
Supported input formats
Supports raw Base64 strings, RFC 2397 Data URIs, and text files containing encoded strings.
Privacy and security
Decoding runs 100% in your browser memory via Web APIs. Zero Base64 data or decoded image files are sent to any cloud server.
Known limitations
Extremely large Base64 strings exceeding 100 MB may cause browser memory lag during string decoding.
Common use cases
- API Debugging — Decoding Base64 image strings returned by REST or GraphQL APIs.
- Database Extraction — Recovering BLOB images saved as Base64 strings in database dumps.
- Web Development — Converting inline CSS/HTML Data URIs back into standalone image files.
Base64 Extractor vs Image to Text
While the image to text OCR tool extracts OCR text from images, this tool decodes encoded Base64 strings into binary image files. For EXIF metadata, use our EXIF data extractor.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a Base64 string to an image?
Paste your Base64 string into the box above and click 'Decode & Extract Asset' to view and download the image.
What is a Data URI?
A Data URI embeds file content inline as a Base64 string using the format data:image/png;base64,...
Is my Base64 data uploaded to a server?
No. Decoding is performed 100% inside your web browser. Nothing is sent to any server.
What image formats are supported?
PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF, and SVG formats are automatically detected and previewed.
