How Markdown tables are structured
GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM) defines tables using pipe characters (|) to delimit columns and
dashed lines (e.g., | --- | --- |) to separate headers from data rows.
While Markdown tables are human-readable in plain text, importing them directly into database systems or Excel
requires parsing escaped pipes (\|), removing inline formatting, and converting the grid to RFC 4180 CSV.
How to convert Markdown tables to CSV
- Paste Markdown or upload a file. Paste text containing pipe tables into the text area above, or drop a .md file onto the box.
- Click Find tables. The parser identifies all standard GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM) pipe tables and delimiter rows.
- Preview the extracted table. Review row and column counts, headers, and cell values in the preview table grid.
- Download CSV. Export the selected table as a CSV file, download all tables combined, or copy TSV to paste directly into spreadsheets.
What gets extracted
- All GFM pipe tables detected in the document.
- Header and data rows with inline Markdown formatting stripped for clean data entry.
- Properly formatted CSV/TSV output ready for database or spreadsheet import.
Supported syntax
Supports GFM pipe tables with outer pipes, leading/trailing whitespace, and inline alignment specifiers (:---, :---:, ---:).
Browser-only processing
All parsing is executed locally inside your Web browser. No text or file content is uploaded to any server.
Limitations
HTML tables embedded within Markdown should be extracted using our HTML table extractor.
Use cases
- Documentation Migration — Moving Markdown README table data into databases or spreadsheets.
- Data Science — Converting Jupyter Notebook Markdown outputs to clean CSV.
Markdown Table Extractor vs HTML Table Extractor
Use this tool for GFM pipe tables (| col |). For HTML <table> elements, use the
HTML table extractor.
