How a RAR archive is structured
The Roshal Archive (RAR) format is a proprietary compressed archive specification developed by Eugene Roshal.
Modern systems encounter two primary format generations: RAR4 (version 2.9/legacy), identified
by the 7-byte signature 52 61 72 21 1A 07 00 (Rar! ), and
RAR5 (version 5.0+), identified by the 8-byte signature 52 61 72 21 1A 07 01 00.
Unlike standard ZIP archives which place their master index (the Central Directory) at the physical end of the
file, RAR archives use a sequential stream of block headers. Each block begins with a cyclic redundancy check (CRC),
a block type indicator, flags, and size declarations. File headers (FILE_HEAD, type 0x74 in
RAR4 or type 2 in RAR5) record the file path, packed bytes, unpacked bytes, modification timestamps,
and dictionary configuration.
How to extract a RAR file online
- Select or drop your RAR file. Drop the .rar archive onto the box above or click to browse. The file is read directly from your local storage in slices, so even large multi-gigabyte archives open immediately.
- Inspect the directory manifest. Every file is cataloged with its real uncompressed size, packed size, compression method, modification date, and CRC32 checksum before anything is saved to your disk.
- Preview text and source files. Click View on any text, CSV, JSON, Markdown, or code file to read its contents in place without downloading.
- Save the unpacked files. Click Save on individual entries to download them directly to your device. Stored files are unpacked without touching the rest of the archive.
What you get out
- Complete directory manifest — hierarchical file paths, folders, unpacked sizes, packed sizes, and CRC32 integrity hashes.
- Archive compression statistics — total file count, folder count, overall packed vs unpacked sizes, and calculated compression efficiency ratio.
- In-browser text previews — instant inspection of text files, scripts, READMEs, and configuration data directly in the viewport.
- Selective file downloads — save unpacked files to your device on demand.
- Exportable audit manifest — copy the file inventory to your clipboard or download a tab-separated (.tsv) audit report.
Which RAR archives this opens
This extractor opens both major standards of the format:
- RAR 4.x archives — legacy archives created by older WinRAR versions (v2.0 through v4.20) and third-party archivers.
- RAR 5.0+ modern archives — current 7-Zip and WinRAR 5+ archives featuring 64-bit integer addressing and multi-megabyte dictionary windows.
- Single-volume archives — standalone
.rarcontainers. For multi-part archives (.part1.rar,.part2.raror legacy.r00,.r01), ensure the first volume is provided.
For ZIP containers, use our specialized online ZIP extractor. For 7-Zip LZMA archives, use the 7z extractor.
Why zero-upload client-side extraction matters
Traditional "online unrar" websites upload your entire RAR file across the public internet to remote cloud servers, decompress the files on their backend, and send back download links. This means confidential corporate spreadsheets, client backups, legal agreements, and personal photos sit on third-party disks for hours or days, exposing your data to network interception and server-side data leaks.
EasyExtract executes 100% client-side in your local browser sandbox. The archive bytes are read from disk into local browser memory via JavaScript and modern Web APIs. No network packets containing your data ever leave your computer, ensuring total compliance with GDPR, HIPAA, SOC 2, and non-disclosure obligations.
Format limits and boundary edge cases
Three specific boundary cases are handled with clear notifications rather than silent failures:
- Password-encrypted RAR archives. Archives with encrypted headers or AES-128/AES-256 encrypted payloads are flagged as password-protected. Decrypting them requires providing the encryption key in a native tool like WinRAR or 7-Zip.
- Solid archive multi-file dependencies. In solid RAR archives, files are compressed as a continuous data stream where decompressing file #50 requires calculating dictionary state from files #1 through #49. Stored entries extract immediately, while compressed solid entries are indexed with their full metadata.
- Split volume dependencies. Spanned multi-part volumes split across disk boundaries require reassembly before extracting files that span across volume seams.
When extracting RAR files in the browser helps
- Locked-down corporate workstations — open RAR archives on enterprise computers where installing unapproved freeware or trial software like WinRAR is prohibited by IT security policies.
- macOS, ChromeOS, and Linux users — inspect and open RAR files on operating systems that lack native out-of-the-box unrar capabilities without installing command-line Homebrew packages.
- Pre-extraction safety screening — examine the real file names and executable extensions inside a downloaded archive to verify authenticity before extracting unknown binaries onto your disk.
- Retrieving individual documents from massive archives — pull a single invoice, log, or script out of a 500 MB archive without wasting time unpacking the entire bundle.
RAR archives compared with ZIP, 7Z, and TAR
RAR is proprietary and prioritizes higher compression ratios and recovery records over open-standard compatibility. In contrast, ZIP is universally supported across every desktop and mobile operating system but achieves lower compression ratios. 7Z (7-Zip) is an open-source format that rivals or exceeds RAR compression ratios through its LZMA and LZMA2 solid algorithms.
For standard archives, use our ZIP extractor. For UNIX tarballs, use our TAR and GZ extractor. RAR format standards and extraction edge cases
RAR archives use block-structured byte headers. RAR 4.x uses a 7-byte magic signature
52 61 72 21 1A 07 00, while RAR 5.0+ uses an 8-byte signature
52 61 72 21 1A 07 01 00. Unlike ZIP, there is no end-of-file central directory;
blocks are parsed sequentially from byte offset 7 or 8 forward.
Three extraction edge cases: (a) solid archives concatenate all file payloads into a single compression dictionary — stored entries extract immediately, while compressed solid entries are cataloged with full metadata; (b) variable-length integers (vints) in RAR5 use 7 bits per byte with the high bit indicating continuation — integers up to 10 bytes can represent files beyond 4 GB; (c) password encryption flags in block headers indicate whether file headers alone or both headers and data are AES-encrypted. Frequently asked questions
How do I open a RAR file without installing WinRAR?
Drag and drop your .rar archive into the box above. EasyExtract parses the archive index and unpacks files directly in your web browser without installing desktop software or buying a WinRAR license.
Is my RAR file uploaded to an external server?
No. The archive is read directly from your local disk and processed entirely within your browser's private JavaScript sandbox. Your files and data are never transmitted over the internet.
Can it open modern RAR 5.0 archives?
Yes. EasyExtract natively supports both legacy RAR 4.x block formats and modern RAR 5.0+ archives with 64-bit addressing and large dictionary structures.
Can I extract password-protected RAR files online?
Password-protected archives are cataloged and identified with locked security badges. To decompress AES-encrypted payloads, use a dedicated offline desktop tool such as 7-Zip or WinRAR with your passphrase.
What is the maximum RAR archive size supported?
Because EasyExtract reads files in binary slices rather than buffering entire multi-gigabyte archives in memory, large files up to several gigabytes open smoothly in any modern 64-bit browser.
Why does my RAR file show as stored?
Stored entries are packaged without compression, which is common for files that are already compressed such as JPEG photos, MP4 videos, and ZIP archives. Stored files can be previewed and downloaded instantly.
How do I open a RAR file on a Mac or Chromebook?
Neither macOS nor ChromeOS includes built-in RAR extraction. Rather than downloading third-party utilities from the Mac App Store, drop your file into this tool to view and extract files instantly in Safari or Chrome.
