What is a QBO file?
A .qbo file (QuickBooks Online Web Connect) is a specialized financial data container based on the OFX (Open Financial Exchange) standard. Banks and credit card issuers use .qbo files to export account statements directly into QuickBooks Desktop and QuickBooks Online.
Under the hood, a QBO file is structured in SGML/XML text using financial tags such as <STMTTRN> for transactions, <DTPOSTED> for transaction dates, <TRNAMT> for debits and credits, and <NAME> for merchant payees. Because these files are not formatted as standard tabular data, Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets cannot open them cleanly without a converter.
How to convert QBO to CSV online
- Select your QuickBooks QBO file. Drop your .qbo Web Connect statement onto the drop zone above, or click to browse. The file is read locally by your web browser.
- Instant client-side parsing. EasyExtract parses the OFX/SGML bank XML tags in memory. Transactions are extracted and formatted into standard accounting columns.
- Download clean CSV or Excel. Click 'Download CSV' to save your statement as a spreadsheet-ready file, ready to import into Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, or modern accounting software.
What transaction fields are extracted
- Posting Date (
DTPOSTED): Standardized to ISOYYYY-MM-DDformat. - Transaction Type (
TRNTYPE): Identifies DEBIT, CREDIT, CHECK, POS, FEE, or PAYMENT. - Transaction Amount (
TRNAMT): Extracted with precise decimal signs preserved (positive for deposits, negative for withdrawals). - Payee Name (
NAME): Cleaned merchant or vendor identifier. - Memo / Reference (
MEMO): Extended bank notes, category descriptions, and transaction references. - Check Number (
CHECKNUM): Extracted check sequence where present.
Supported formats & bank feeds
Supported Inputs: QuickBooks Web Connect (.qbo), Quicken Web Connect (.qfx), and standard Open Financial Exchange (.ofx) files from any major bank (Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citi, Capital One, Barclays, RBC, TD, and credit unions).
Supported Output: Standard RFC 4180 Comma-Separated Values (.csv) compatible with Microsoft Excel, Apple Numbers, Google Sheets, Xero, Wave, and Zoho Books.
Why bank data must never be uploaded
A bank statement contains sensitive financial records: full account numbers, bank routing routing IDs, personal transaction history, vendor names, and cash balances. Handing this file to a cloud converter transfers confidential accounting data to third-party servers, creating compliance and security vulnerabilities.
EasyExtract processes 100% of your QBO file inside your browser memory. No financial data is ever transmitted over the network or saved to any database. You can safely convert statements offline or behind corporate firewalls.
What this tool does not do
- It does not convert CSV back to QBO: This tool extracts QBO into CSV/Excel. For importing data back into legacy QuickBooks, use standard CSV bank import mapping.
- It does not connect to bank APIs: There is no bank login or credential harvesting; you supply the downloaded bank statement directly.
- It does not modify original bank balances: Calculations are strictly read-only representations of statement line items.
Common QBO to CSV use cases
- Migrating from QuickBooks: Moving your accounting books from QuickBooks Desktop to Xero, Wave, or Excel.
- Bank Statement Auditing: Inspecting raw transaction logs and running custom pivot tables in Excel.
- Tax Preparation: Consolidating year-end bank feeds and expense categories for your CPA or tax advisor.
- QuickBooks Import Errors: Converting corrupted or rejected QBO files into clean CSV for standard bank reconciliation.
QBO compared with OFX, QFX, and CSV
QBO and QFX are branded derivatives of the open OFX standard, created by Intuit to tie bank downloads to QuickBooks and Quicken. CSV is the universal open standard supported by every spreadsheet and database in the world. EasyExtract converts proprietary Intuit feeds into open CSV effortlessly.

Is it safe to convert bank statements with EasyExtract?
Yes, 100%. EasyExtract operates entirely client-side using JavaScript. Your statement is parsed in local browser RAM and is never uploaded to any server.
