How to Extract a Signature From a Photo (Free, No Upload)

A photo of your signature has a white paper background baked in — drop it onto a document or email and you get a white box that sits on top of everything, looking nothing like a real signature. The fix is to make the background transparent, so only the ink remains. This guide shows you exactly how to do that, free, without sending your signature to any server.

The whole process takes under a minute. You end up with a transparent PNG you can place on contracts, PDFs, letterhead, or email sign-offs as if you had signed them directly on screen.

Why a transparent background matters

A signature PNG with a white background is not really usable — the white kills it. A transparent PNG drops cleanly onto any coloured background, any document, any template. Real situations where this matters:

  • Signing a PDF — overlay the PNG on a signature field; no white box, no mess.
  • Email sign-offs — embed the signature in an HTML email footer so it sits on the brand colour, not a white rectangle.
  • Letterhead and templates — place the PNG on a pre-designed Word or Google Docs letterhead without covering the layout.
  • Sending a contract — paste the transparent PNG into the relevant field before PDF-ing the document, rather than printing, signing, and scanning.

How to extract a signature from a photo

These steps match the controls in the EasyExtract signature extractor. Everything runs in your browser tab.

  1. Photograph the signature. Use dark ink on plain white paper. Shoot straight-on — no angle. Even lighting, no shadows cutting across the strokes. A phone camera in good daylight is fine; you don’t need a scanner.
  2. Drop the photo onto the tool. Open the signature extractor and drag your photo onto the drop zone, or click to browse. PNG, JPEG, WebP, and HEIC all work as input.
  3. Tune the threshold slider. The slider controls which pixel brightness counts as “background.” Slide it until the white paper disappears completely while the ink stays solid. If the ink starts disappearing, slide back slightly.
  4. Use the optional checkboxes if needed. “Force ink pure black” converts grey or faded strokes to full black — useful for low-contrast photos or old scans. “Trim to signature” crops away the empty margins so the PNG is tight around the ink.
  5. Download the transparent PNG. Click Download. The file contains only the signature strokes against a transparent background, ready to place anywhere.

Why nothing is uploaded

A signature is a piece of personal identity. Handing it to an unknown server — where it could be logged, stored, or leaked — is a real risk most people don’t think about until after they have done it. The EasyExtract signature extractor processes your photo entirely inside your browser tab using the Canvas API. The image data never leaves your device, no request is made to any server, and nothing is retained after you close the tab. The same privacy guarantee applies to every tool on the site — see the security and privacy page for the full explanation.

Tips for the best result

  • Dark ink, plain white paper. The bigger the contrast between ink and background, the cleaner the separation.
  • Shoot straight-on. Any angle distorts the strokes and can introduce uneven brightness across the page, making the threshold harder to set.
  • Even lighting, no shadows. A shadow across part of the signature darkens the paper there; those pixels look like ink and will bleed through.
  • If strokes go faint: lower the threshold slider, or re-take the photo with more contrast — brighter room, phone flash, or darker pen.
  • Lined or coloured paper makes separation harder. The lines and tint sit in the same brightness range as light ink. Use blank white paper if at all possible.

Can I extract a signature from a PDF?

This tool works on image files — JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC. If your signature is embedded inside a PDF (for example, a scanned signed contract), you need to get it out as an image first. Use the PDF image extractor to pull the relevant page or embedded image out of the PDF, then bring that image here to remove the background. If you also need to read the text surrounding the signature — names, dates, clause numbers — the image to text tool can extract that in the same workflow.

Frequently asked questions

How do I extract a signature from a photo?

Drop a photo of the signature onto the EasyExtract signature extractor. The paper background is made transparent by your browser, and you download the result as a transparent PNG. Nothing is uploaded.

How do I get a signature on a transparent background?

Use a luminance-threshold tool: pixels lighter than a set brightness (the paper) become transparent; darker pixels (the ink) are kept. The EasyExtract tool does this in your browser with an adjustable slider.

Is it safe to upload my signature online?

The EasyExtract signature extractor processes your photo locally in your browser — the image is never sent to a server. That matters for a signature, which is a piece of personal identity.

What image format should I use?

PNG, JPEG, WebP, or HEIC all work as input. The output is always a PNG, because PNG is the only common format that supports transparency.
